What Is A Vertical Kiln?
A vertical kiln (also known as a vertical shaft kiln) is an industrial thermal processing tower used for the high-temperature calcination and roasting of mineral aggregates. Featuring a stationary, vertically aligned cylindrical shell, raw limestone or materials are loaded from the top and descend through preheating, calcining, and cooling zones via gravity, interacting with counter-current rising hot combustion gases.
Zhonghui Machinery vertical kilns are widely recognized for their low capital investment, small floor space requirements, and exceptionally high heat utilization profiles compared to rotary horizontal kilns.
Ideal Applications & Thermal Processing Materials:
Active Lime Production: High-activity lime calcination for metallurgical steelmaking, chemical plants, and construction.
Mineral Sintering: Roasting of dolomite, bauxite, magnesite, and refractory aggregates.
Industry Scenarios: Medium to large-scale lime processing plants, iron and steel works, sugar refineries, and calcium carbonate chemical industries.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Find expert answers to the most common questions about our industrial vertical shaft kilns, including fuel blending, lime activity parameters, and system maintenance.
Q1: What are the main economic benefits of a vertical kiln over a rotary kiln?
A: Vertical shaft kilns require significantly lower initial capital investment and feature a highly compact footprint. Because they operate on a gravity-fed counter-current principle, their thermal heat recovery is exceptional, consuming 20% to 30% less fuel energy per ton than traditional rotary configurations.
Q2: What feed size requirement is ideal for vertical shaft kilns?
A: To guarantee uniform airflow distribution throughout the shaft column, the raw limestone feed size should ideally be between 40 mm and 80 mm (or up to 120 mm for larger models). The feed must be clean and screened to avoid powdery fines blocking the combustion air channels.
Q3: What types of fuels can power your industrial vertical kilns?
A: Our vertical kilns are compatible with standard solid fuels such as metallurgical coke or anthracite coal blended with the feed. We also design advanced modern variants fitted with side-firing gas burners that run cleanly on natural gas, producer gas, blast furnace gas, or heavy oil fuel.
Q4: How do you achieve high activity levels in calcined lime?
A: Our kilns prevent over-burning and under-burning by utilizing an automated PLC temperature regulation system alongside precision rotating material distributors. This uniform temperature layout keeps lime activity consistently high, typically exceeding 300 ml to 350 ml (HCl titration test).
Q5: How long do the internal refractory linings last in continuous operation?
A: Under proper, continuous temperature operation and correct material distribution, our premium high-alumina and magnesia insulating firebrick layers deliver an extended operational life cycle of 3 to 5 years before requiring localized repairs.
Q6: Do you supply automated material handling and environmental systems?
A: Yes, absolutely. Zhonghui Machinery designs and supplies complete turnkey vertical kiln plants. This includes top charging skips, weighing systems, cyclones, high-efficiency baghouse dust collection filters, and bottom product conveying elevators.
Q7: What is the estimated factory production schedule for a shaft kiln plant?
A: Heavy-duty structural metal fabrications, distributing gear drives, and grate mechanisms take approximately 40 to 50 working days to manufacture and clear staging at our factory plant.
