What Is A Disc Filter?

An industrial disc filter (also known as a rotary vacuum disc filter) is a continuous dewatering plant designed for rapid solid-liquid separation of heavy mineral slurries. It consists of multiple independent vertical filter discs mounted on a horizontal rotating shaft, partially submerged in a slurry vat, using controlled vacuum pressure to extract liquids while accumulating thick solid particles onto the cloth sectors.

Zhonghui Machinery vacuum filtration designs prioritize optimal hydraulic efficiency, quick sector replacement mechanisms, and uniform cake distribution under heavy mineral processing workloads.

Ideal Applications & Slurry Processing:

  • Mineral Ore Dewatering: Processing iron ore concentrates, copper tailings, gold flotation slurries, and coal fines washings.

  • Chemical & Metallurgical Plants: High-efficiency recovery of metal oxides, industrial chemical precipitates, and chemical salts.

  • Environmental Wastewater: Solid recovery from heavy industrial sludge, tailings management, and recycling water treatment networks.

How Does a Disc Filter Work?

Continuous rotary vacuum sequence achieving complete solid-liquid separation inside our disc filter.

01
Vacuum Cake Formation
As the filter sectors submerge into the slurry vat, internal vacuum pressure draws liquid through the cloth, trapping solids on the exterior to form a uniform filter cake.
02
Dehydration Drying
The rotating drum lifts the cake out of the slurry vat. The continuous vacuum pulls residual moisture out of the solid cake layer, driving down moisture levels rapidly.
03
Compressed Air Discharge
When reaching the discharge zone, the vacuum cuts off. A controlled pulse of compressed air blows out from the inside, inflating the cloth and dropping the dry cake into the chute.
04
Cloth Regeneration
The cleaned filter sectors pass by integrated high-pressure spray water bars, washing away residual particle blinding to ensure premium permeability for the next filtration loop.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Find expert answers to the most common questions about our disc filter installations, including cloth longevity, vacuum pump requirements, and slurry density guidelines.

Q1: What are the main advantages of a disc filter over a drum filter?

A: A disc filter provides a much larger filtration area within the exact same workshop footprint because its filter panels are stacked vertically. This makes it highly compact, cost-efficient, and ideal for high-capacity mineral concentrate dewatering plants where floor space is limited.

A: Cloth selection depends on slurry particle size, acidity, and temperature. We supply premium monofilament or multifilament synthetic fabrics (such as polypropylene, polyester, and nylon) woven with specific pore diameters to maximize solids recovery while preventing premature blinding.

A: For standard metal ore flotation concentrates like iron, copper, or lead, our vacuum disc filter systems regularly achieve stable output cake moisture levels between 9% and 15%, depending on the mineral fineness distribution and slurry feed density.

A: High-density mineral ores settle rapidly due to gravity. Our plant integrates an automated horizontal paddle agitation shaft at the bottom of the vat, keeping the solids perfectly suspended to guarantee uniform cake thickness on every rotating disc sector.

A: Yes. Every disc is divided into 10 to 12 individual pie-shaped wedge sectors made of high-strength structural plastic or stainless steel. If a single cloth tears, operators can quickly swap out just that one sector without dismantling the remaining plant structure.

A: Yes, absolutely. Zhonghui Machinery provides complete turnkey liquid-solid separation packages. This includes liquid-ring vacuum pumps, filtrate separation receivers, barometric blow-back air tanks, and continuous filtrate discharge pumps sized for your plant elevation.

A: Standard vacuum filtration units take approximately 25 to 35 calendar days to complete precision shaft machining, vat fabrication, distribution valve balancing, and factory hydraulic leak testing.
